Competition for the McDonald’s Egypt franchise was intense, with nearly 200 applicants vying for the business. McDonald’s chose the Mansour Group in 1994. The fast-food business is labor intensive, contributing to with the Mansour Group’s aim of generating employment opportunities. Today, McDonald’s Egypt operates 50 restaurants outlets nationwide.
Like all Mansour Group ventures, McDonald’s Egypt has a long-term strategy that in this case includes manufacturing and export. The company holds shares in a factory in the Sixth of October City that produces ingredients for the chain. By the end of 1998, McDonald’s Egypt began exporting these food products to outlets in Greece and Cyprus with plans to cover other regional markets. An additional export opportunity resulted as a spin-off from McDonald’s Egypt’s work with agricultural produce suppliers.
